 lobster sunday

lobster-sunday-hero.jpeg

Look alive people. Summer is dwindling. It's right about now that we're all feeling a little done with rosé, we're complaining about the heat, and Maybe we've gotten tired of traveling on the weekends. But I implore you to power through. Just think of yourself freezing your fanny off mid-February swearing on all that's good and great for the snow to melt.

beCause did you hear? The Farmer's Almanac published its yearly predictions this week...and it's ugly thanks to a little weather pattern known as el niño. Remember those TWO LITTLE words that you banished from your summer vocabulary: polar vortex? It's baaaaack. Now that we've taken you through the ghosts of winter past and future please remember that it's still August! step outside into the sweltering humidity and bask in your own sweaty glow. You have at least another month before you're forced to break out a scarf!

So what did we cook to celebrate the still habitable weather? Lobster, of course!

Below you'll find an easy way to hypnotize your lobsters before cooking so they don't squirm so much when you put them in boiling water. Yup, writing that sentence does make us feel a little like Dexter. Nope, we don't care. Makes you think though. Who was the first person who looked at that spiny, prehistoric-looking creature and said...'ya, I'm going to take that clawed critter on.' we're imagining some mix of McGyver and Michael Bolton. Only someone that smooth could pull it off.

So pop open a beer, melt some butter and crack open those crustaceans. It's still summer, baby!

ingredients

  • as many lobsters as you want
  • 4 TBSP salt for cooking water
  • 1/2 stick of butter per lobster
  • 2 lemon wedges per lobster

How to cook lobsters // lobster hypnosis

1. Boil a large lobster pot  1/2-3/4 full of heavily salted water. be sure not to overcrowd them in the pot too much. depending on the size of our pot, you may want to boil in two batches.

2. Hypnotize your lobsters. See video here.  We learned this trick from our dear friend Alex who has family in Maine, so you know it's legit.

3. Place lobsters into boiling water, head first.

4. Place cover on pot and cook for 12-20 minutes (however long it takes for the water to reach a boil again).

5. Using tongs, take the lobsters out of the pot and serve.

6. If you have garden shears, clip the tip of the claws and drain the water for the least messy cracking option.

7. Melt copious amounts of butter (half a stick per lobster) and serve lobster with lemon wedges.

Omission gluten-free beer

We get it. Gluten free stuff sounds disgusting. And most of it is. We're convinced that gluten is the thing in food that makes it taste good. But not everyone's stomach can handle the goodness of gluten. Thankfully, Omission Brewery (their Pale Ale featured in the photo) actually tastes like beer.
